Women's Volleyball Closes out 2017 Season with Losses to Vassar, John Jay

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team concluded its season with a pair of losses in a tri-match hosted by Vassar College at Kenyon Hall on Saturday, falling to host Vassar, 3-0 (25-11, 25-5, 25-12), before dropping a 3-1 (29-27, 17-25, 25-18, 25-21) decision to John Jay College.
 
Plattsburgh State finishes the 2017 campaign at 6-21 overall, while Vassar and John Jay rise to 21-6 and 16-10, respectively.
 
Vassar 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-11, 25-5, 25-12)
 
The Cardinals ran into an efficient Brewer offense in the first match of the day, as Vassar hit .374 as a team. Vassar finished with a 9-3 edge in service aces, but Plattsburgh State did have the lone block of the contest.
 
Freshman middle hitter/right side Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly), sophomore right side/setter Brianna Coon (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) and sophomore outside hitter Megan Hyde (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) all finished with two kills, while sophomore middle hitter Tatyana Barlow (Palmdale, Calif./Pete Knight) served up two aces. Defensively, freshman outside hitter Rachel Mennonna (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) defended eight digs.
 
For Vassar, junior hitter Devan Gallagher led the way with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage, while senior setter Sophia Tiajoloff distributed 21 assists. Freshman libero Anna Zucchero ignited the back row with a match-high 13 digs.
 
John Jay 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (29-27, 17-25, 25-18, 25-21)
 
Plattsburgh State actually outhit John Jay in its final match of the day, posting a .231 hitting percentage to the Bloodhounds' .227. John Jay ultimately won with a 51-45 edge in kills, though the Cardinals did hold the upper hand in service aces (12-9) and blocks (8-5).
 
Mennonna and Simmons keyed the Cardinal offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Coon handed out 31 assists. At the service line, Hyde landed a career-high four aces. Defensively, Simmons had five block assists, while Mennonna completed the double-double with 11 digs. Freshman libero Maddy Zophy (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) also reached double figures in digs with 10.
 
John Jay relied heavily on junior outside hitter Brittany Steele for offensive production, as she floored 23 kills and hit .404. Sophomore setter Kimberly Rodriguez doled out 46 assists, while senior libero Anna Gevorgyan served up four aces. Four Bloodhounds reached double figures in digs, led by freshman outside hitter/setter Brianna Geraldo's 15.
