Men's Soccer Unable to Overcome Two First-Half Goals in 2-0 Loss to Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team fell to The College at Brockport, 2-0, in its penultimate State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game of the season Friday afternoon at A. Huntley Parker Jr. Field.

Despite the setback, the Cardinals remain alive in the hunt for a SUNYAC playoff spot. With SUNY Geneseo and Fredonia both losing their Friday contests as well, Plattsburgh State can clinch the No. 5 seed into the SUNYAC Tournament outright with a win over Geneseo tomorrow. Even with a loss, the Cardinals will still qualify for the six-team SUNYAC Tournament if Fredonia ties or loses to SUNY Oneonta tomorrow. A Fredonia win coupled with a Plattsburgh State tie or loss would eliminate the Cardinals from SUNYAC Tournament contention.

Plattsburgh State drops to 9-6-1 overall (3-4-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and visits SUNY Geneseo in its SUNYAC finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. Brockport rises to 9-4-3 overall (4-2-2 SUNYAC) with the win and hosts SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles locked up the No. 4 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament with the victory.

Brockport got on the board in the 21st minute, as senior defender Chris Aherne headed in a cross from the left wing served in by junior midfielder Quintin Volpe. Sophomore forward Russell Hines added insurance for the Golden Eagles in the 39th minute, booting in a header pass by junior forward Connor DeSantis inside the 18-yard box.

The Golden Eagles, who were outshot 7-5 in the first half, played for possession in the second half and wound up posting the shutout.

Plattsburgh State finished with a 10-7 edge in shots, while Brockport held a 5-2 cushion in corner kicks.

Junior forward Chris Robertson (Thiells, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional [N.J.]) led the Cardinal attack with three shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) made one save in the loss for Plattsburgh State, while sophomore goalkeeper Joseph Romano made two stops in the shutout decision for Brockport.
