Men’s Hockey Stumbles in Road Loss to SUNY Canton

College Hockey Stats Box Score

CANTON, N.Y. – The nationally-regarded Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team fell to SUNY Canton, 4-1, in non-conference action at the Roos House on Saturday. Plattsburgh State, which played on the road for the first time since Nov. 12, slips to 6-8 on the season, while the Kangaroos move to 4-9-2. The Cardinals are receiving votes in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.

Plattsburgh State freshman Noah Batis (Martinsville, Ind./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) scored with help from classmates Philip Middleton (Vail, Colo./Salmon Arm Silverbacks) and Gavin Yates (Plymouth, Mass./South Shore Kings). Freshman Antoine Desnoyers (Quebec City, Quebec/Cegep Champlain St. Lawrence) was 10-of-15 on faceoffs, while sophomore Cam Owens (Wilmington, Mass./Islanders Hockey Club) won 12 draws. Senior Brady Rouleau (Fort Macleod, Alberta/Quinnipiac) made 21 saves.

Canton was led by sophomore Joey Vocino and freshman Vili-Jesper Koivula, who both had one goal and one assist. Juniors Kyle Matsumoto and Trenton Yule both scored, while freshmen Tyler Bullard and David Hopfer assisted. Sophomore Josh Erickson collected 30 saves for the win.

The Cardinals led by one after a 10-shot opening period. While cycling in the Plattsburgh State offensive end, Middleton played the puck to Yates on the right side boards and Yates dropped off to Batis, who snapped the shot past Erickson glove side with just 31 seconds remaining in the first stanza.

Dead even at 12 shots aside in the second period, Canton capitalized on two late goals to take a 2-1 lead. Koivula redirected a Hopfer shot from the point at 17:33 for the equalizer and Vocino hit Matsumoto with a quick pass from left to right in the slot as the Kangaroos went up by one just 27 seconds later. The hosts added to their lead at 12:50 in the third period. After Rouleau stopped Koivula's initial shot, Vocino buried the rebound for a power-play marker. Yule iced the game with an empty-net tally with 10 seconds to go.

Plattsburgh State returns home next weekend for two more non-league games, beginning with Middlebury College on Friday at 7 p.m.
