CANTON, N.Y. – Buoyed by yet another strong performance from sophomore outside hitter
Sam Colombo (Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport), the Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team broke into the win column on Tuesday evening at Burkman Gymnasium, defeating non-conference St. Lawrence University, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-14).
Colombo keyed the Cardinal attack with a match-high 16 kills while hitting .308 for the match. She also added seven digs and a service ace.
Plattsburgh State rises to 1-4 overall with the win and next competes at the Wheaton (Mass.) College Tournament from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 9-10. The Cardinals kick off the weekend on Friday with a 6 p.m. match against Emmanuel College. St. Lawrence slips to 0-5 with the loss and cohosts the Victory Promotions Tournament with SUNY Potsdam from Sept. 9-10.
The Cardinals held the Saints to .021 hitting for the match, while both teams posted four service aces. Defensively, St. Lawrence held the upper hand in digs (44-41) and blocks (6-0).
Beyond Colombo, the Cardinals received contributions from a pair of fellow returners. Sophomore setter
Sydney Gabriel (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) dished out 24 assists, while junior defensive specialist
Jordynne Ales (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown) defended 14 digs.
For St. Lawrence, freshman middle hitter/right side Amanda Teppo led the way with a .500 hitting percentage (6-0-12), while sophomore defensive specialist Ally Good posted 17 digs.
