PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In the final minutes of double overtime, it was Plattsburgh State's
Madeline Saccocio (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) who found the back of the net to cap off a 2-1 victory over the Union College Dutchwomen on Tuesday night.
Saccocio's goal came with 5:13 left after a shot by teammate
Anissa Hartmann (Fairfax, Vt./BFA Fairfax) deflected off Union Goalie Erica Matteo and found the feet of a crashing Saccocio.
The Cardinals held the lead heading into the second half thanks to a beautiful
Sarah Haight goal that chipped Matteo from roughly 25 yards out in the 43rd minute.
It was in 74th minute that the Dutchwomen would strike to tie the game. In a scramble in front of the Cardinal net, Nicole Sturno punched through to even the score at one apiece.
The contest almost never reached overtime, as the Cardinals had a free kick with seconds left in regulation that sailed bar down. However it appeared as if an offside call kept the contest going, setting the stage for Hartmann and Saccocio.
Cardinal goalie
Nichole Gibson (Arkport,N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishiop Gibbons) recorded seven saves in the win.
Plattsburgh State sits at 2-0 to start the year, and will travel on Friday to play the Sage Colleges before its next home match on Sunday against the Lyndon State Hornets at 4 p.m.
