Spear's Game-Winner Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-0 Double-Overtime Win over Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. – After 101 minutes and 58 seconds of scoreless play, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team received a game-winning goal from junior midfielder Ian Spear (Peru, N.Y./Peru) to defeat non-conference North Country foe Clarkson University, 1-0, in double overtime on Tuesday evening at Hantz Turf Field.

Spear provided the unassisted game-winner for the Cardinals, blasting a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the top left corner of the net at 101:58. Spear wound up receiving the ball in the first place due to a fortuitous bounce that came off a blocked crossing pass.

Plattsburgh State rises to 3-0-0 with the win and next competes at the St. Joseph's (L.I.) College Invitational from Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 10-11. The Cardinals' first match of the weekend will occur against host St. Joseph's (L.I.) on Saturday at 12 p.m., and they wrap up play with a 12 p.m. contest versus St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) College on Sunday. Clarkson drops to 2-1-0 overall with the loss and next visits SUNY Geneseo on Friday, Sept. 9, for a 4 p.m. match.

The win gave Plattsburgh State its 17th straight win over Clarkson and upped the Cardinals' all-time series lead over the Golden Knights to 33-12-3.

Plattsburgh State outshot Clarkson, 14-3, and held the upper hand in corner kicks, 7-6. The Golden Knights were whistled offside twice, while the Cardinals did not sustain any offside calls during the contest.

Offensively, senior forward Alexis Archilla (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) took four shots (two on goal) for Plattsburgh State, while senior forward Brian Kroetz posted two shots (one on goal) coming off the bench for Clarkson.

Junior goalkeeper Andrew LaClaustra (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) posted his second clean sheet of the season, making one stop in 101:58 of action. Clarkson's netminder, senior Michael King, made five stops in the loss for the Golden Knights.
