CORTLAND, N.Y. – It was a back and forth affair between the Geneseo Knights and the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in day two of the SUNYAC Tournament, where the Cardinals fell short in an 8-6 decision to the Knights.
Geneseo was first to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Dani Napoli took Cardinal pitcher
Morgan Anderson deep for a two-run home run.
The Knights struck again in the top of the second, this time pushing across just one run for a 3-0 lead.
Katie Pitkin replaced a struggling Anderson in the circle after one and one-third innings pitched.
Plattsburgh State responded in a big way in the bottom of the second. With one runner on, left fielder
Amy Glashoff homered to left field. Then with the bases loaded, it was
Amanda Tantillo who singled through the right side and brought in two runs.
After two, it was a 4-3 Cardinal lead.
The slight advantage didn't last long. Geneseo drew a few walks out of Pitkin and loaded the bases. Knights' first baseman Abby Dennett took advantage of the bases loaded opportunity and smacked a double that scored all three runners on base.
The Cardinals and Knights would each exchange runs throughout the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Plattsburgh State's effort came up short as it could not find a way to come through against Geneseo pitcher Taylor Moore, and would fall to the Knights, 8-6.
Pitkin struck out four batters in the loss, while Moore threw for five and two-thirds in getting the win.
Plattsburgh State slips to 26-16 while the Knights sit at 25-15.
With the loss, the Cardinals were scheduled to play the Buffalo State Bengals at 1 p.m. However, that game has been suspended until Saturday at 10 a.m. due to rain.
The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when the game was stopped.
