BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team (8-8) traveled to Brockport Wednesday afternoon for a SUNYAC semifinal matchup against the Golden Eagles (12-4), falling in the final minutes, 7-6.
Mike Gay led the way with a pair of goals for the Cardinals as they featured five different goal scorers on six goals. Senior goaltender
Matt Massaria kept Plattsburgh State in the game all afternoon, making a career-high 17 saves in his last collegiate game.
The Cardinals opened up strong in the first quarter, scoring the first two goals of the game.
Pat Nash got the scoring started with a quick shot on top of the crease to make it 1-0.
Ryan Hubbard would get the second score from the left post on a relatively empty net after the Brockport goalie slid. However, the Golden Eagles would get two of their own to close the first to tie the game at two goals apiece through the opening 15 minutes.
In the second, it was more Brockport as it scored two more goals to start the quarter. It was part of a 4-0 run by the Golden Eagles that featured three different goal scorers with Liam Cannon netting two. The junior midfield duo of
Austin Belz and Gay would level the game to 4-4 for Plattsburgh State, as the two teamed up for two goals in 45 seconds in the final 1:30 of the first half.
With the first half featuring a game of runs, the second half was the exact opposite as the teams traded goals going back and forth down the stretch. With game even at 4-4, Brockport opened the third quarter with a goal by Jake Giudice less than two minutes in for his second of the evening. With 10:16 showing in the third,
Brendan Damm would tie the game for Plattsburgh State at 5-5. Exactly halfway through the third quarter Marcus Palvino got the Golden Eagles back ahead, 6-5, as that score would hold heading into the fourth.
After over 11 minutes of scoreless action, Gay would continue the see-saw affair and make it 6-6 with 10:19 left in the fourth. It would mark the fourth tie of the game between the two clubs. Brockport would break the tie late in the game with a man-up goal from John Countryman to make it 7-6. Countryman was the third Golden Eagle to notch two goals in the game. Plattsburgh State had two chances in the final minute to strike another equalizer but just couldn't find the back of the net as the game ended in a scrum for the ball in front of the Brockport cage.
Conor Nowak made nine saves for the Golden Eagles in the win.
Faceoffs and ground balls were pretty even between the two teams.
Joey Kromer went 8-for-15 as Kevin Klaiber and Zach Cook combined to go 7-for-15 and the Golden Eagles held a 29-23 advantage in GBs.
The biggest disparity in the game came in the penalties department as Plattsburgh State took eight for eight and a half minutes compared to Brockport's three for two minutes. With that, Brockport went 2-for-8 on extra-man opportunities while the Cardinals went 0-for-3.
Plattsburgh State finishes its season at 8-8, including 4-2 in conference. 2016 marks the fifth straight year that the Cardinals have at least gone 4-2 in SUNYAC play.
