PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Entering the Last Week of the regular season, the Plattsburgh State softball team dropped a set of non-conference games to the Middlebury Panthers by a score of 10-1 on Wednesday.
Game 1: Plattsburgh State 1, Middlebury 10 (5 inn.)
Middlebury took control of game one early and they pushed across seven runs in the second inning, largely in part to Taylor Gardener and Siobhan O'Sullivan who each homered.
The Cardinals got their lone run in the bottom of the second inning when
Jennifer Sarcone grounded out to third base with the bases loaded, scoring
Dominique Zummo.
Middlebury would go on to score two in the fourth and one in the fifth.
The Panthers homered three times in game one en route to ending the game in five innings due to the eight run rule.
Cardinal pitcher
Morgan Anderson went four innings, striking out three batters in the loss.
Game 2: Plattsburgh State 1, Middlebury 10 (6 inn.)
In game two, each team tallied a run in the first inning, and were at a stalemate until the fourth inning.
Plattsburgh State scored its only run when
Amy Glashoff drew a walk with the bases loaded and sent
Jennifer Groat home from third base.
The Middlebury bats were in full force Wednesday, as the Panthers homered four times in game two alone, bring the total to seven home runs in both games.
The Cardinals were able to hold Middlebury to five runs through five innings, but it was the sixth inning where the Panthers got the best of Cardinal pitcher
Katie Pitkin, who would exit the game lasting five innings and striking out three batters.
Taylor Smith came in as relief for Pitkin, but Middlebury was too strong at the plate, homering twice in the sixth, and eventually tally five runs in the frame to again defeat the Cardinals via run rule.
With the wins, Middlebury improves to a 20-8 overall record.
Despite the non-conference blemishes, Plattsburgh State still sits at 23-15 overall and will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when the Potsdam Bears visit for the regular season finale slated to begin at noon at Cardinal Park.
