CORTLAND, N.Y. – Three Plattsburgh State batters had multi-hit performances on Sunday against third-ranked SUNY Cortland, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Red Dragons pounded 19 hits en route to a 14-3 win over the Cardinals at Robert H. Wallace Field.
The defending national champions complete the weekend sweep over Plattsburgh State, improving to 27-5 and 10-4 in the SUNYAC, while the Cardinals drop their eighth straight game and fall to 3-25 on the season and 1-11 in conference play.
After 2 ½ innings of scoreless baseball, Cortland's bats came alive as they put up five runs in both the home third and fourth innings on a combined 11 hits to go up 10-0.
Plattsburgh State scored one run in the each of the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Junior
Trevor Markey singled up the middle with two outs to drive in pinch runner
Jordan Godfrey and get the Cardinals on the board in the fifth.
Jon Craft,
Eric Rock, and
Matt Fox all singled in the sixth, leading to the second Plattsburgh State run. Markey hit into a double play in the seventh that brought home the final run for the Cardinals.
The Red Dragons added four runs in the bottom of the eight to increase their lead to 14-3. Senior
Andrew Kramer withstood the damage in the third, fourth, and parts of the eighth inning, firing a career-high 127 pitches in the start. He would be relieved by sophomore
Mitch Crispens, who allowed two runs on two hits while walking two batters.
Markey finished 2-for-5 with an RBI, while
Matt Fox and
Eric Rock each went 2-for-4, with Fox picking up an RBI.
The Cardinals will return home for their final stretch of home games this season, beginning with a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon against Middlebury. The single, nine-inning contest is scheduled to get underway at Chip Cummings Field at 4 p.m.
