PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team opened its quest for their fourth straight Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West tournament championship with a 5-0 victory over Oswego State.
Plattsburgh State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when senior
Andrea Ziesmann sent a slap shot off the faceoff by Lakers goalie Tori Trovato.
The Cardinals would tally two more in the second with goals by
Jordan Lipson and
Mackenzie Millen.
Lipson would take it 2-0 converting a wraparound goal from behind the net. Just over a minute later, Millen would intercept an Oswego State pass in the offensive zone, setting herself up with a quick wrister through the five hole of Trovato.
Sophomore,
Melissa Sheeran would add two more to her team-leading 23 goals in the third period to salt the game away for the Cardinals. First, Sheeran would tuck in a rebound off her own shot by the pads of Trovato before converting an easy tap in on top of the crease from a
Kayla Meneghin pass.
Camille Leonard earned her 13
th shutout of the season, making 15 saves in the process. Leonard shut out the Lakers all three times this season. Trovato finished the afternoon with 32 saves on 37 shots.
With the win Plattsburgh State improves to 25-1-0. The No. 1 seed Cardinals will play the No. 3 seed Utica. The Pioneers defeated Elmira 5-1 in the first semifinal matchup. The ECAC West Championship game between Plattsburgh State and Utica will take place
Sunday at
3 p.m. inside the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena.
