Brendan Damm tallied three goals while junior
Austin Belz and sophomore
Ryan Hubbard each added two goals and an assist to help lead the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team to a 12-8 victory over previously 5-1 MIT Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field.
The Cardinals jump back over the .500 mark, improving to 4-3 on the season while the Engineers fall to 5-2.
Plattsburgh State dominated the first half of the contest, outscoring MIT by a 10-3 mark. Eight of those 10 goals were scored in the second quarter.
Sophomore attackman
Ryan Hubbard opened up the scoring just prior to four minutes into the first. Belz would get his first of the afternoon just over two minutes later on a man-up opportunity to make it 2-0 Cardinals.
The Engineers got on the board with a man-up goal of their own with 5:28 left in the opening quarter as Paul Orrson got the tally. 2-1 was how the first frame would end.
Damm would score two of the next three goals as the Cardinals increased their lead to 5-1. Sophomore
Brandon Heimbuch registered the other mark for Plattsburgh State, his first of the year.
The Engineers ended their goalless drought with 10:55 left in the second quarter to make the score 5-2, but the Cardinals would break the game open with another goal streak, this time four straight to take a 9-2 lead.
Belz picked up his second goal of the game just over a minute after the MIT score to begin the scoring spree. The Bayport, N.Y., native received a nice feed from
Brendan Damm, who was positioned behind the net.
Seniors
Mitchell LaBianca and
Matt Renko would get the next two tallies before Damm finished off his hat trick with his 15
th goal of the season.
After the Engineers got a goal back with two minutes left in the second, Hubbard notched his second of the game with 17 seconds remaining to give Plattsburgh State a 10-3 lead heading into halftime.
Sophomore Matt Prokesch scored three minutes into the third before assisting on a man-up goal by Pat Nash with 5:49 left to go in the frame.
MIT would tally four goals to cut into the Cardinal lead in the final five minutes of the fourth, including three in the last 1:05.
Senior faceoff specialist
Joey Kromer excelled in the circle on Saturday, going 16-for-21 in the circle while picking up 14 groundballs.
Matt Massaria made 12 saves in the winning effort to pick up his fourth win of the season.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday, when they will host RPI. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
