PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The top ranked Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team kept right along with its winning ways, defeating SUNY Cortland 7-1 Saturday afternoon.
Plattsburgh State would open a 1-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Sophomore
Kayla Meneghin scored a shorthanded goal dekeing through the Red Dragon defense including the goalie for an easy finish.
The Cardinals would tally three goals in the second period, including a pair of back-to-back power play goals.
Freshman,
Karen Hudson made it 2-0, receiving a perfect pass in the slot from
Muna Fadel who was positioned below the net to beat SUNY Cortland goaltender Deanna Meunier.
The next two goals would come via the man advantage. First was
Courtney Moriarty for her 13
th of the year followed by Lipson for her 11
th to open the Cardinal lead to 4-0.
SUNY Cortland would get on the board 2:28 into the third period to cut the Cardinal lead to 4-1. Katie Gill would score off a rebound, putting it past Cardinal goaltender
Camille Leonard before she could dive back across the crease.
Plattsburgh State would end the game on a 3-0 run to make it 7-1.
Melissa Ames buried a shot in the left circle, coming from a cross ice pass from Moriarty on the power play to make it 5-1.
Freshman,
Ashley Songin got her second of the season, collecting a loose puck that came out of a scrum in front of the net to beat Meunier for a sixth time.
Moriarty would get her second of the game to cap off the scoring with 3:30 left in the game scoring just 51 seconds after Songin.
Cardinal goalie, Leonard finished with 10 saves for her 19
th win while Meunier made 40 saves in a losing effort.
Plattsburgh State remains unbeaten on the season and improves to 21-0-0 (14-0-0 ECACW) while Cortland slips to .500 on the season at 9-9-1 (5-7-1 ECACW).
The Cardinals and the Red Dragons will face off again tomorrow at 3 p.m. to finish their weekend series.
