FREDONIA, N.Y. – Sophomore forward
Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) scored a game-high 27 points and added 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season, as the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team topped Fredonia, 75-57, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game on Saturday afternoon at the Steele Hall Fieldhouse to cap a weekend sweep for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State shot 41.2 percent (28-of-68) from the floor on the afternoon and limited Fredonia to 33.3 percent (18-of-54) shooting. The Cardinals won the rebounding battle, 46-34, and forced the Blue Devils into 19 turnovers.
Plattsburgh State rises to 5-1 overall (2-0 SUNYAC) with the victory and next hosts non-conference Skidmore College on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. Fredonia falls to 3-4 overall (1-1 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visits Oswego State on Friday, Dec. 9, at 5:30 p.m.
Fredonia controlled the momentum early, jumping out to a 6-1 lead following a made jumper by senior guard Richard De La Cruz. The Cardinals countered with a 17-1 surge, however, with a basket by sophomore guard
Brandon Johnson (Greenburgh, N.Y./Woodlands) handing the visitors an 18-8 advantage. The Blue Devils whittled the deficit to three midway through the period before Plattsburgh State ballooned the differential to 13 on three occasions down the stretch in the first. Fredonia did end the first half with five unanswered points to pull the Blue Devils within 35-27 heading into the locker rooms.
After the two teams traded points to start the second stanza, Plattsburgh State relied on an 8-1 scoring spree to break open a 14-point advantage, with Patron capping off the spurt with a made jumper. The outcome was never in question from that point forward, as Plattsburgh State led by as many as 20 in the waning minutes of the contest.
In addition to Patron, junior guard
Eric Mack (Roosevelt, N.Y./Baldwin) provided yet another strong offensive performance for the Cardinals, as he scored 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor coming off the bench. Junior guard
Zack Coleman (Putnam Valley, N.Y./Putnam Valley) helped pace the Plattsburgh State attack, as he dished out a game-high three assists.
For Fredonia, junior forward Ian Helps registered a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Nicc Johnson drained 12 points coming off the bench.
