Men's Basketball Drops 91-73 Decision to St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – St. Lawrence University shot 43.8 percent (14-of-38) from beyond the arc, as the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team fell to the Saints, 91-73, at Burkman Gym on Tuesday night in a non-conference contest.

Sophomore forward Jonathan Patron (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields) put together yet another strong offensive performance for the Cardinals, scoring 27 points on 12-of-21 shooting from the floor while adding nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Ian Howard (Queens, N.Y./Springfield Gardens) helped out on the glass, too, with 12 boards, six of which came on the offensive end. Sophomore guard Brandon Johnson (Greenburgh, N.Y./Woodlands) keyed the Cardinals' perimeter defensive efforts with three steals coming off the bench.

For St. Lawrence, four student-athletes scored in double figures, led by senior guard Willie Zachery's 19. Junior forward Riley Naclerio finished with eight rebounds and three blocks, while senior guard Kyle Kobis finished just shy of a triple-double with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Plattsburgh State drops to 3-1 overall with the loss and opens up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Friday, Dec. 2, at Buffalo State at 5:30 p.m. St. Lawrence rises to 4-1 overall with the victory and next hosts Ithaca College on Friday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m.

While St. Lawrence scored the first points of the game, Plattsburgh State used a 7-0 run to gain a 7-3 lead. The Saints then began raining down 3-pointers, with Kobis handing the home team a 16-9 lead with 14:55 to go before halftime. A 5-1 Plattsburgh State run made it a one-possession game, as sophomore guard/forward Chris Middleton (New York, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) sank a free throw to pull the Cardinals within 17-14. The two teams traded points until St. Lawrence erupted for a 31-15 run to close the half. A pair of free throws by Naclerio and one free throw by Zachery gave the Saints a 54-35 edge heading into the locker rooms.

That lead wound up being sufficient enough for St. Lawrence to cruise to the win, as the Saints led by as many as 27 points in the second half.

Plattsburgh State shot 35.1 percent (26-of-74) from the field on the game and fared well from the free-throw line to the tune of a 76 percent (19-of-25) clip. The Cardinals also held a slight 45-43 advantage in rebounds.
