MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey junior
Melissa Sheeran (Schaghticoke, N.Y./Millbrook School) eclipsed the 100-career point plateau as the top-ranked Cardinals beat No. 3 Adrian (Mich.) College, 5-0, on the opening day of this year's Panther/Cardinal Classic at Chip Kenyon Arena on Saturday. Plattsburgh State improves to 8-1 and faces host No. 5 Middlebury College in the championship game on Sunday at 4 p.m., while Adrian suffers its first loss of the season and is now 6-1. The Bulldogs take on Utica College in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Plattsburgh State is tied with Elmira College atop the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll this week.
With two goals on Saturday, Sheeran pushed her career point mark to 101 in 62 games and became just the 12th player in program history to reach triple figures in points. Joining Sheeran in Saturday's goal column were sophomores
Mackenzie Millen (Anchorage, Alaska/North American Hockey Academy),
Courtney Moriarty (Estero, Fla./Northfield Mount Hermon) and
Ashley Songin (Springville, N.Y./Nichols School). Junior
Megan Crandell (Fullerton, Calif./Saint Norbert) and freshman
Hannah Kiraly (Newport Beach, Calif./Northern Cyclones) both had two assists, while four other Cardinals chipped in one helper apiece. Senior
Camille Leonard (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Jr. Hornets) picked up her 24th career shutout by stopping 20 shots.
Adrian senior Kaylyn Schroka was 19-of-28 on faceoffs and classmate Kristin Lewicki won six draws. Classmates Brooke Gibson and Jade Walsh combined for 28 saves in net.
Plattsburgh State jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to an 11-shot opening period. Sheeran opened the scoring at 2:22 when she lifted a shot over Gibson's left shoulder after receiving a pass from senior
Erin Brand (Long Beach, N.Y./Syracuse). The Cardinals then scored twice late in a 1:10 span, as Songin stuffed in a rebound at 17:09 and then Moriarty responded at 18:19 with a rebound goal of her own.
Adrian narrowly trailed, 13-10, in second-period shots. While on the power play in the stanza, Lewicki darted down the right side and dished a cross-ice to senior Sarah Shureb, who pushed the shot just wide of the left post. Plattsburgh State extended its lead to 4-0 as Sheeran circled the net and collected a rebound that founds its way home at 8:13 on the power play. The Bulldogs killed off a third-period 5-on-3 penalty, but the Cardinals responded with 6:10 remaining in the game as Millen's tip-in off of Crandell's shot made the score a 5-0 affair.
