Women’s Soccer Returns to Win Column in 5-1 Victory over New Paltz

New Paltz, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's soccer team saw five different Cardinals score in what was a 5-1 victory over the New Paltz Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

Contrary to the end result, it was New Paltz who scored first on Saturday.  The Hawks' Skye Kaler gave her team the edge under a minute into the start of the game.

Although falling in an early hole, the Cardinals were able to rebound roughly 34 minutes later. Midfielder Madeline Saccocio (Schenectady, N.Y./Schalmont) scored the equalizer on a shot from about 25 yards out.

Four minutes later, Cammey Keyser (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) ripped a shot that rattled off the crossbar and gave the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage, which would hold through to halftime.

It was all Plattsburgh in the second half. Senior midfielder Ashlie Guinness (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) got a head on a corner kick and scored for her fourth goal of the season in the 54' minute.

Leading 3-1, Cardinal forward Sarah Haight (East Meredith, N.Y./Charlotte Valley) added some insurance in the 71' minute, and scored her seventh goal of the season.

Rounding out the Cardinal scoring, senior Madison Trombley (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh) scored her first goal of the season on a set piece from 30 yards out.

Plattsburgh State outshot New Paltz 37-7 for the contest.

Cardinal goalie Nichole Gibson (Arkport, N.Y./Arkport) made five saves in earning the win.

The Cardinals now have an overall record of 9-5 and improve to 4-1 in conference play.

Plattsburgh State will return home next weekend for games against Buffalo State on Friday and Fredonia on Saturday.
