ONEONTA, N.Y. – In its final contests of the 2016 season, the Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of SUNY Oneonta's Dig Pink Invitational Saturday afternoon, falling, 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-20), to Hartwick College before defeating Elmira College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21).
For her efforts during the weekend, freshman outside hitter/right side
Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Plattsburgh State ends its season at 14-17 overall, doubling its win total from last season. Hartwick ends its season at 9-18 overall, while Elmira wraps up its season at 6-15 overall.
Hartwick 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (17-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-20)
Hartwick gained momentum as the match went on, fashioning a .201 hitting percentage for the match in the four-set victory. Plattsburgh State did, however, hold the upper hand in service aces (10-7) and total team blocks (6-2).
Sophomore outside hitter
Sam Colombo (Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport) led Plattsburgh State with a double-double (13 kills, 10 digs), while sophomore setter
Sydney Gabriel (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) dished out 39 assists. Defensively, freshman libero
Bryanne Yasui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) defended 16 digs, while Grotjohn and sophomore middle hitter
Shelby Bourgeois (Keeseville, N.Y./AuSable Valley) each finished with three block assists.
For Hartwick, senior outside hitter Hannah Armstrong and junior right side Rosa Maun recorded 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while freshman setter Erin Russell distributed 36 assists. Senior libero/defensive specialist Alyssa Zeitler tallied a match-high 17 digs to lead the Hawks' back row defensively.
Plattsburgh State 3, Elmira 0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-21)
Plattsburgh State capped off its season with a win, hitting .202 compared to Elmira's .106 hitting percentage in the victory. The Cardinals held a 10-4 margin in service aces, while the Soaring Eagles finished with a 2-0 advantage in total team blocks.
Grotjohn keyed the Plattsburgh State offense with 13 kills, while freshman middle hitter
Tatyana Barlow (Palmdale, Calif./Pete Knight) and Colombo each floored three aces. Gabriel handed out 30 assists.
For Elmira, sophomore outside hitter Natalie Schieder landed 12 kills, while sophomore setter Taylor Kaznowski provided 22 assists. Kaznowski and Schieder each completed a double-double with 13 digs apiece.
