FREDONIA, N.Y. – The sixth-seeded Plattsburgh State men's soccer team tied third-seeded Fredonia, 0-0, in double overtime but fell, 5-4, in penalty kicks during the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament first round Saturday at University Stadium. As a result, the Blue Devils move on to the semifinal round.
Plattsburgh State's season ends at 12-5-2 overall, while Fredonia moves to 11-6-2 overall and visits second-seeded SUNY Oneonta in the semifinal round on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 1 p.m.
With a chance to go up, 5-4, in penalty kicks, Plattsburgh State ended up getting denied by Fredonia's freshman goalkeeper Ty Bentham, which kept the penalty-kick shootout tied at 4-all. Senior forward Sam Greco then buried the deciding goal in the sixth round to send the Blue Devils to the semifinal round.
Plattsburgh State received several opportunities to score during the contest, as it finished with a 20-12 edge in shots on the game, including a 12-3 margin in the second half. Fredonia did, however, outgain Plattsburgh State, 7-4, in corner kicks.
Junior midfielder
Nicholas Laurent (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) paced the Cardinal offense with five shots (one on goal), while senior midfielder Ryan Keller took a team-high four shots (two on goal) for Fredonia.
Freshman goalkeeper
Patrick Feeley (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) made three stops in the clean sheet for Plattsburgh State, while his counterpart, Bentham, turned aside nine shots for Fredonia.
