Melissa Ames netted a pair of goals for the Cardinals including a power play goal against William Smith Saturday afternoon.
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team took the ice for the second-straight day against William Smith, hanging nine on the Herons again in a 9-1 win.

The Cardinals jumped all over William Smith, scoring six goals in the first period.

For the second-straight game, freshman Courtney Moriarty opened the scoring for the Cardinals. She tallied today's goal just 26 seconds into the game on backhander over William Smith goalie Emily Spencer.

Jordan Lipson would team up with Melissa Ames to tally the next two goals within a minute of each other to make it 3-0. Lipson would collect the puck out of a scrum in front of the net to beat Spencer. Ames deflected a Melissa Sheeran pass into the back of the net on the power play.

Lipson would get her second of the game, again collecting a loose puck from a block shot and then roofing it over Spencer for a 4-0 lead.

Senior, Bridget Balisy would jam one by Spencer to make it 5-0 with 3:51 remaining in the first period. Balisy goal would mark the end of the day for Spencer as Laurel Brown would come in for relief.

Nineteen seconds later, Ames would net her second of the game on a snipe off the corner bar beating Brown over her glove, giving the Cardinals a 6-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

William Smith would get its first goal of the weekend 3:29 into the second period to make it 6-1. Stephanie Hampton would get credit for the Herons goal for her third of the season.

In the opening minute of the third period, Kayla Meneghin would make it 7-1 Cardinals.

Julia Duquette picked up her first goal of the season 2:26 into the final period. Her shot from the blueline knuckled past Brown for an 8-1 lead.

Sheeran would get her first of the game and 14th of the season 14:17 into the third period to cap off the 9-1 contest.

Kassie Abbott got the start for the Cardinals, earning her second win of the season.

Plattsburgh State remains unbeaten at 15-0-0 (9-0-0 ECACW) while William Smith falls to 4-9-2 (1-7-2 ECACW).

The Cardinals will return to the Stafford Ice Arena on Tuesday against rival Norwich for a non-conference clash of ranked teams. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
