Volleyball Launches 2015 Campaign with Straight-Set Home Trouncing of Green Mountain

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Each and every member of the 2015 Plattsburgh State volleyball team registered court time in Memorial Hall on Wednesday night and all the time the Cardinals required to dispatch Green Mountain College 3-0 (25-4, 25-5, 25-20) was just under an hour in the season opener for both squads.

Freshman Izzy Ruff tallied a match-high seven kills on the strength of a .400 hitting percentage for the hosts who move to 1-0. As a team, Plattsburgh State swung at a clip of .293 while limiting the Eagles (0-1) to an attack rate of -.279. As a squad, Plattsburgh State also whacked down some 15 service aces.

As lopsided as the match turned out to be, it was actually the visitors who drew first blood, racing out to a 2-0 lead by way of a Plattsburgh State attack error and a service ace from Sandra Parra. From there, though, it was all Cardinals as the hosts uncorked an 18-0 run which featured a trio of service aces from Miranda Sheffer and another from the hand of sophomore Lauren LaDuke.

Through the course of the one-sided run, Ruff hammered down a pair of kills while sophomore Noelle Miller added one of her own. Jordynne Ales made it 1-0 in favor of the home squad by striking for the game's final point on the Cardinals' fifth service ace.

More of the same unrelenting Cardinal assault was present in the middle set as Plattsburgh received three service aces from Evelyn Vicencio and a pair of terminations from Melissa Wickers to open up a 12-1 advantage.

Green Mountain managed to trim the Cardinals' edge to 15-4, but another big run – this one of the 10-1 variety – closed out the set and left the home team just one frame away from its first triumph of 2015. Jackie Mariotti chipped in a pair of service aces while Vicencio, Tammara Brandon and Amanda Robinson each added a kill during the final barrage.

It appeared as though the deciding game would go in the books as another disproportionate score as Kate Roos spiked down a kill which kick-started a 4-1 Plattsburgh State surge to begin the set.

The Eagles, though, put any plans of a quick third set on hold by scoring six of the next eight points to take a 7-6 lead after Hayley Loisel's service ace. Again, the service game of the Cardinals allowed the home team to reel off some quick points as a 6-1 spurt which featured a trio of aces put it back on top 12-8.

A lead greater than six points, though, was impossible to come by in the set and Green Mountain closed to within one of the hosts on two separate occasions down the stretch. Holding a 16-15 edge, the Cardinals used kills from Brandon, Robinson, Roos and Ruff to construct the majority of a 6-1 run and take a 22-16 lead.

From there, a termination from Ruff coupled with a LaDuke service ace and a service error by Green Mountain put the finishing touches on the Cardinals' straight-set triumph.

Vicencio passed out a match-best 12 assists and also took home match-high honors in the service ace department. Of the 15 aces the Cardinals finished up with, five came off the hand of the Plattsburgh, N.Y., product.

Noelle Miller and Brandon each finished with three kills for the Cardinals while Sheffer, Robinson, Roos and Wickers added two apiece.

Torie Cowell finished up with a trio of spike downs and an attack percentage of .250 to lead the Eagles.

Facing a turnaround of just under 48 hours, the Cardinals will embark on a short road excursion to SUNY Canton on Friday and Saturday to take part in the SUNY Canton Invitational. Plattsburgh State's four-match slate begins with a bout against the host Kangaroos at 4 p.m. on Friday followed by a 6 p.m. tilt with Plymouth State that same night.
