BROCKPORT, N.Y. – As of late – although grammatically incorrect – there ain't been no stopping Plattsburgh State's
Scott Orr.
The junior out of Baldwinsville, N.Y., turned in another dazzling performance on the hill, firing a complete game and registering six strikeouts while surrendering just five hits, as he led the Plattsburgh State baseball team to a 2-0 win over The College at Brockport at Clark V. Whited Field on Saturday afternoon.
Orr improved to 4-1 with his latest nine-inning win and hasn't given up a run in his last two starts as the Cardinals improve to 9-11 and 4-4 in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) games. Brockport slipped to 11-10 and 4-8 in conference action.
Billy Rombauts went 2-for-4 at the place and
Mike Vargues scored the game-winning run in the fifth as he traversed the 90 feet from third to home on a wild offering by Brockport's Dakota Stackhouse. The Golden Eagle also went the distance and fell to 2-2 by giving up six hits, a walk and both runs.
Through the first 4.2 innings, Orr faced the minimum number of batters and was assisted by some great defense by
Frank Buksa behind the dish during that span. The senior out of Plattsburgh, N.Y., gunned down two would-be base stealers to back Orr's fine day on the mound.
No Brockport baserunner reached beyond first base on Orr and senior
Nick Lupo added the Cardinals' insurance run with a two-out infield RBI hit in the top of the eighth.
Mike Vargues initiated the Cardinals' scoring play in the fifth with a one-out single before Rombauts slapped a two-bagger down the right field line.
TJ Montalbano also had a hit for Plattsburgh State in the win while Sean Giesel and Wesley Burghardt each had two hits for the Golden Eagles in the loss.
The Cardinals and Golden Eagles will finish off their three-game series with a Sunday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
