Anderson and Marshall Lift Cardinals Past UW-Stout as Part of 1-1 Day

CLERMONT, Fla. – Led by a high-quality pitching performance by junior Morgan Anderson in their first game of the day, the Plattsburgh State softball team was able to go 1-1 in its penultimate day of competition at the NTC Training Complex.

The Cardinals downed the University of Wisconsin-Stout 5-1 before falling to Bethel University 2-1 in the second game of the day. Plattburgh State's record now stands at 4-8.

GAME ONE: Plattsburgh State 5 (4-7), UW-Stout 1 (6-10)
Another strong outing in the circle by junior Morgan Anderson yielded the Cardinals' fourth win of 2015 as the Johnsonville, N.Y., product fired six innings of five-hit ball with two walks and a trio of strikeouts.

The Cardinals didn't waste too much time before giving Anderson a lead to work with. Nicole Chiarello got caught in a rundown play trying to steal second, and Amanda Tantillo wisely raced home from third to make the score 1-0. Tantillo reached back on one of the three Blue Devil errors.

Some well-timed hitting in the top of the third helped the Cardinals increase their lead. Brittany Marshall drilled a two-out RBI triple to score Dominique Zummo before Kelsey Gage brought the senior home with an RBI single which pushed the lead to 3-0.

Hope VanBrocklin had yet another important two-out hit for the Cardinals when her single in the top of the fourth scored Evelyn Vicencio and made matters 4-0 Plattsburgh State.

The Blue Devils scored their only run of the game in the home half of the fourth with an RBI coming off of a sacrifice bunt.

Stout's third error of the tilt led to the Cardinals' final run. After stealing second, Marshall came all the way around to score on a two-base error by the Blue Devils' center fielder.

Marshall (2-for-4) was the only Cardinal to record multiple hits and finished with two runs scored as well as an RBI.

Beth Wood was hit with the loss for the Blue Devils as she lasted just three innings and gave up three runs on three hits and a pair of walks.

GAME TWO: Bethel University 2 (7-6), Plattsburgh State 1 (4-8)
Taylor Smith found herself on the wrong end of the tough loss in the Cardinals' pitcher's duel with Bethel University.

Only 10 combined hits were registered in the battle between Minnesota and New York institutions, but the biggest and most important came off the bat of Caroline Kivisto who launched a game-winning solo home run with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Marshall pushed the Cardinals' only run of the game across home plate in the third when her sacrifice fly plated Hope VanBrocklin to give Plattsburgh State a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the third.

The Royals knotted things up at one in the top of the fourth when Kivisto swiped home plate as part of a double steal.

Smith worked four innings and struck out five for the Cardinals while allowing just three hits. Her counterpart, Kelsey Anderson, surrendered three hits in a complete-game effort.

Plattsburgh State will take part in its last two Florida games of the year on Saturday. The Cardinals are scheduled to take on Oberlin College at 9 a.m. before facing off against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 11 a.m.
