CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team got back on track after dropping both games last weekend by defeating SUNY Cortland 8-3.
The Cardinals got on the board early when freshman Melissa Sheeran tallied a goal just 1:24 into the game.
Mia Favretto would make it 2-0 when she found the back of the net six minutes into the first period.
Shannon Stewart would notch her 125 career point when she gave the Cardinals a 3-0 led at the end of the first period.
SUNY Cortland would answer in the second period scoring three goals of its own to tie the game 3-3 after 40 minutes.
Abby Adams and Niamh O'Connor would tally the first two goals for the Red Dragons before Sydney Carlucci would convert on the power play with 1:41 remaining in the second period.
Plattsburgh State would counter with a five goal third period to salt away any chances the Red Dragons had at pulling off the upset.
Olivia Fox would strike quickly for the first of two goals she netted in the third period. Her first would come with 1:09 into the period before scoring her second with just two seconds left in the game on the power play.
Stewart would also score twice in the contest when she made it 5-3 5:38 into the third period.
Birdget Balisy and Alyssa Parke would also score for the Cardinals in the third period.
Ally Ross earned the start for Plattsburgh State but was relieved by Camille Leonard at the start of the third period. Ross made 13 saves on 16 shots while Leonard picked up her tenth win of the year stopping all seven shots she faced in the third.
Red Dragon goalie Deanna Meunier allowed eight goals on 64 Cardinal shots in the losing effort.
No. 2 Plattsburgh State goes to 16-2-2 (12-2-0 ECACW) while SUNY Cortland falls to 5-12-2 (4-7-2 ECACW)
The Cardinals will go for the sweep of the Red Dragons Sunday at 3 p.m. as they look to improve their ECAC West record.
