POTSDAM, N.Y. – After former Plattsburgh State women's basketball great Suzanne Souza closed out her career as the Cardinals' all-time leader in assists in 1988 with 475 helpers, it took over a quarter-century before that record stood even a slight chance of being broken.
Already one of the best players to wear a Plattsburgh State women's basketball uniform, it seemed only fitting that senior Brittany Marshall was the one to surpass the long-standing record.
Marshall tied for team-high honors with 12 points and dished out a game-high six assists to become the program's new career leader in that statistical category as the Cardinals throttled SUNY Potsdam for the second time this season via a 64-47 score.
It took just 3:37 for Marshall, who took the court for the first time since Feb. 7, to move into first place in career assists as she collected helpers on the first two Plattsburgh State field goals in the team's wire-to-wire triumph. She now has 480 assists in her career - the second school record the Malone, N.Y., product holds.
With the win, the Cardinals stay squarely in the hunt for a postseason berth by improving to 11-12 and 8-8 in league games. The Bears, meanwhile, fell to 1-22 and 0-16 in SUNYAC games and are winless in their last 20 games.
In addition to Marshall's historic night, junior Allie Taylor provided another spark for the Cardinals by adding 12 markers of her own to go along with a game and career-high 13 rebounds. Playing in her hometown, sophomore Shanielle Chambers came up with the best game of her career, registering career highs in points (12) and three-pointers (four).
Plattsburgh State's string of impressive defensive performances continued on Tuesday as it held the Bears to a lousy 6-for-31 (19.4-percent) shooting clip through the first 20 minutes en route to building up a 22-point cushion at the halftime break.
A total of five Cardinals would put points in through the course of a 16-6 run in the first eight minutes of the tilt. Marshall capped the run with a deep ball off an assist from Jax Miller.
The last time SUNY Potsdam would pull within single digits was when Carli Reynolds dropped in three of her game-high 18 points with a triple before the midway point of the frame while made matters 16-9.
With that, the Cardinals clamped down on defense, allowed the Bears to pump in just one more field goal through the next 7:03. On offense, Plattsburgh State uncorked a 16-3 scoring blitz with the last nine points coming off of a trio of trifectas by Chambers.
Miller joined in the three-point barrage during the run while Jessica Dolan and Devona Paul each scored a two-point basket during that span.
After heading out for the second half up 36-14, the Cardinals needed eight more minutes to register their largest lead of the night. Chambers and Marshall each delivered from downtown, their shots bookending a layup from Stephanie Linder and pushing the Plattsburgh State edge to 51-26.
Plattsburgh State shot 41.3-percent (26-for-63) from the field in the win and canned nine three-pointers. The Bears finished with a field goal clip of 30.6-percent (19-for-62) and were out-rebounded 53-36. Yazmin Lewis and Marshall each added seven board for the Cardinals.
With one more win, the Cardinals will lock up a spot in the 2014-15 SUNYAC Championship Tournament. Their first chance to do so comes on Friday night when Plattsburgh State returns home to face off against The College at Brockport at 7:30 p.m.Â
