PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The top ranked Plattsburgh State women's ice hockey team squared off with Buffalo State in a battle of Eastern College Athletic Conference West (ECACW) unbeatens, dropping the Bengals 2-0.
Sophomore,
Melissa Sheeran would give the Cardinals a 1-0 with just 17 seconds remaining in the first period. Sheeran collected the puck in the corner boards before circling out to the slot and roofing it over Buffalo State goalie, Justine Silva.
The second period and majority of the third would remain scoreless as each goalie made save after save turning away several great scoring chances by both teams.
Captain,
Bridget Balisy would provide Plattsburgh State an insurance goal with just 3:59 remaining in the game. Balisy would tap in rebound through Silva's five hole after the Bengals goalie made an initial save on a
Jordan Lipson shot.
Camille Leonard played spectacular again for the Cardinals making all 15 saves she faced. It gives the Oakville, Ontario native her fifth shutout on the season, which is tied for the most in the nation.
Siliva made 39 saves on 41 shots for Buffalo State including robbing the Cardinals of multiple goals. Silva earned second star of the game in the losing effort and is now 7-2-0 on the season.
The Cardinals remain perfect moving to 11-0-0 (6-0-0 ECACW). Buffalo State (8-2-0, 6-1-0 ECACW) suffers its second-straight loss including its first ECACW loss on the season.
Plattsburgh State and Buffalo State will complete its weekend series Sunday at 3 p.m. as each team will be looking for its seventh ECACW victory.
