Men’s Hockey Suffers First Loss of Season at Geneseo, 5-4

Cam Owens scored his first goal as a Cardinal Saturday night on the power play to tie the game 4-4 against Geneseo.
GENESEO, N.Y. – The top ranked Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team wrapped up is fall semester on the road against No. 14 Geneseo, falling to the Ice Knights 5-4.

After a pair of Plattsburgh State penalties, Geneseo would jump out to a 1-0 lead 10:20 in the first period, capitalizing on the 5-on-3 power play opportunity.

Minutes later, the Cardinals would be a man down again as Kevin Emmerling would pick up a five minute major and game misconduct for charging on Geneseo goaltender Devin McDonald. However, the Ice Knights were unable score on the extended power play.

The first 4:23 of the second period would produce the fireworks that would carry over for the rest of the contest.

Geneseo would take a 2-0 lead, scoring 1:44 into the second period on Anthony Marra's third of the season.

However, the Cardinals would tally two goals exactly a one minute apart to knot the game up at 2-2.

Senior Connor Gorman would get the Cardinals back within one before freshman Pat Egan tied it up 3:11 into the middle frame on a man advantage goal of their own.

Geneseo would temporarily halt the Plattsburgh State momentum when it scored 1:12 after the Egan goal to regain the lead at 3-2.

Later in the second period, Geneseo's Brodie Tutton would pick up a five minute major and game misconduct for contact to the head on Cardinals goaltender Spencer Finney.

Just like the Ice Knights, the Cardinals were unable to net a power play goal on the extended advantage as the game headed into the third period at 3-2.

Senior captain Michael Radisa would get the Cardinals tied back up at 3-3 just before the midway point in the third, but for the second-straight time, Geneseo had the quick answer, recapturing the lead at 4-3 just 33 seconds later.

Less than four minutes would go by before Cardinal freshman, Cam Owens would tie the game for the third time, netting a power play goal to make it 4-4.

As the game wind down, Geneseo won a draw to David Ripple in the Plattsburgh State zone setting up the senior for a quick wrister that went over the shoulder of Finney from the right circle to take a 5-4 lead with just 2:06 remaining in the game.

Plattsburgh State would get several scoring chances down the stretch with extra skater by pulling the goalie but McDonald stood on his head to keep the Cardinals at bay and keep the game at 5-4.

Finney suffered his first loss of the season and as a member of the Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team. He was previously 14-0-2 in his career since transferring midway through his sophomore year. Finney finished the night with 34 saves on 39 shots.

McDonald remains unbeaten on the season at 7-0-1 as he stopped 27 of 31 Plattsburgh State shots.

The game featured a handful of penalties as the teams combined for 13 infractions for a total of 48 minutes. Plattsburgh State would finish 2-4 on the power play while Geneseo went 1-6.

Plattsburgh State (8-1-1, 5-1-1 SUNYAC) suffered its first lost on the 2015-16 season as the Cardinals were the last ranked unbeaten team in division III hockey. Geneseo improves to 7-1-2 (4-1-2) on the season after starting the year 0-0-2.

The Cardinals will take their holiday break before returning to the Stafford Ice Arena for their annual WB Mason/Buck Supply New Year's Tournament on January 1. Plattsburgh State will open the tournament against Fitchburg State while Nazareth and Colby will face-off in the other game.
