Cardinals Defeated in Three Sets by Oneonta

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. After a weekend off following senior night last Thursday, the Plattsburgh State volleyball team dropped its first match of the final weekend of SUNYAC Pool Play 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-16) to Oneonta at the Hawk Center on the campus of New Paltz Friday night.

The Cardinals fall to 7-16 overall and 1-6 in conference matches while the Red Dragons improve to 15-10 including a 5-2 mark in SUNYAC contests.

Plattsburgh State led for much of the first set until Oneonta scored eight straight points to turn a 13-10 deficit into an 18-13 lead. The Cardinals couldn't put a point streak together and ended up hitting on just .070 percent of their shots for the set.

In second set, it was Oneonta who jumped out to an early lead, earning consecutive point streaks of six and three to hold a 12-6 advantage. Two straight Red Dragon errors got the Cardinals even at 13-13, but Oneonta struck for four points in a row to grab a 19-15 advantage, eventually claiming the second set by the same score as the first, 25-20.

Oneonta held Plattsburgh State's shooting percentage to -.067 in the deciding set, and distanced itself from the Cardinals in the middle of the frame.

Sam Colombo had 10 kills for the Cardinals, while Sydney Gabriel, Izzy Ruff, and Jordynne Ales all tied for a team-high eight digs. Gabriel would also add a game-high 20 assists.

The Red Dragons' Jill Darpino had 10 terminations on 24 attempts, good for a .375 shooting percentage. Allyson Coniglione collected eight digs, and Erin Avery helped with 19 assists.

The Cardinals will play their final conference matches of the regular season on Saturday in New Paltz, first matching up against SUNY Cortland at 10 a.m. before taking on Brockport at 3 p.m.
