PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In her third consecutive game in the starting lineup, junior Allie Taylor scored 18 points and fellow junior Stephanie Linder added 16 on 7-for-10 shooting as the Cardinals ran roughshod over SUNYAC cellar-dweller SUNY Potsdam 60-32 in Memorial Hall on Tuesday night.
The triumph upped the Cardinals' record to 7-7 and 4-3 in SUNYAC games and marked the third time since the 2007-08 campaign that Plattsburgh State limited an opponent to fewer than 35 points. Plattsburgh State also held the Bears to 32 on January 22, 2013 in a road win against the Bears. SUNY Potsdam slides to 1-13 and 0-7 in league play.
When the dust had finally settled, the Cardinals had held the Bears to a paltry 23.2-percent (13-for-56) showing from the field while forcing 29 SUNY Potsdam turnovers. The Cardinals also owned a 51-35 rebounding edge over their North Country rivals.
Also reaching double-digits for the Cardinals was Devona Paul, who scored the first two of her 14 from the free throw line. Those charity stripe swishes from the Blauvelt, N.Y., junior sparked a 6-0 run for the home team to open the conference bout.
On the strength of a triple and a jumper from Carli Reynolds and a free throw make by Veronica Sapp, the Bears whittled their early deficit down to just two points, 8-6, before the Cardinals embarked on an 11-2 offensive odyssey to up their lead to double-digits for the first time.
Misha Green began the run with an unobstructed layup off of one of Brittany Marshall's three assists before Linder put in her first trey of the night followed by a short two-point jumper. Taylor and Paul closed the books on the spurt by making one layup each.
Up 19-8 at the midway point of the opening frame, the Cardinals never really felt all that threatened by the Bears again. Reynolds capped a 5-0 Potsdam run with another long ball to trim the Cardinals' edge to just seven points, 23-16, but Paul scored all four of the points in the last two minutes of the half, giving the home squad a 29-18 edge headed to the halftime strategy session.
During the course of the opening eight minutes of the last half, Plattsburgh State more or less put the Bears out of their misery by uncorking a 25-8 run which upped the home team's lead to 54-26.
All but two points during Plattsburgh State's game-clinching scoring streak came from the hands of Linder, Paul and Taylor. Senior Yazmin Lewis capped the massive run with a short turnaround jumper in the paint.
Reynolds had a team-high 11 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds for the visitors.
From there, Plattsburgh State never saw its massive lead dip below 26 points. The Cardinals' edge hit 30 for the first and only time when Taylor sank a layup with 65 seconds left in the one-sided affair. Â
With its latest SUNYAC win in tow, the Cardinals will embark on another challenging conference road trip. On Friday night, Plattsburgh State will roll in to SUNY Geneseo for a rematch of the 2013-14 SUNYAC Tournament Championship game. The Cardinals will tip off with the league-leading Knights (10-4, 6-1 SUNYAC) at 7:30 p.m.
