Box Score OSWEGO, N.Y. – Aiming to secure its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) triumph of the 2014 campaign, the Plattsburgh State volleyball team instead found itself on the wrong end of a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-18) score against SUNY Geneseo at Max Ziel Gymnasium on the campus of Oswego State on Friday night.
The Cardinals slip to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the Knights continue their hot start, rising to 14-2 and 1-0 in league bouts.
Once again, the Cardinals came out of the gates a little slower than necessary only to improve as the match progressed. In the opening frame, Plattsburgh State committed eight errors to just four terminations on 26 swings for an attack percentage of -.153.
Although it was able to cut down on the attack errors in the middle frame, Plattsburgh State also saw its kill total diminish. The Cardinals put up a -.079 figure, recording a trio of kills and five errors on 25 attempts.
The final set saw Plattsburgh State close to within seven points of the Knights before all was said and done. Entering positive attack percentage territory for the first time on the evening, the Cardinals swung at a clip of .147 in the last set.
Freshman Miranda Sheffer totaled a team-best six kills on 20 attack attempts to compliment her solo block while senior Maggie Schrantz added five terminations to go along with a six digs.
Evelyn Vicencio and Meghan Clifford each collected two of the Cardinals' four service aces during the three-set battle. Clifford also registered 11 assists to go along with a team-high seven digs.
The Knights' Paige Pendleton amassed seven blocks and was one of three SUNY Geneseo players who collected six kills. Tricia Baxley led the offensive charge for the Knights with a match-high eight kills.
The Cardinals will hit the volleyball court for another pair of SUNYAC matches on Saturday. Plattsburgh State aims to earn its first conference triumph of the season as it tangles with Oswego State – the host of the SUNYAC Pool Play weekend – at 10 a.m. before closing out its three-match weekend with a 12:30 p.m. tilt with Fredonia State.
