Cardinals on Wrong End of 3-0 Tuesday Match at SUNY Canton

Sophomore Jackie Mariotti collected a team-best 10 digs for the Cardinals on Tuesday night.
Box Score CANTON, N.Y. – Offensive of any kind was difficult to come by for the Plattsburgh State volleyball team on Tuesday night as the Cardinals struggled to generate kills in a 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-11) setback to SUNY Canton at Roos House.

During the match, the Cardinals (4-5) cobbled together an attack percentage of -.080 compared to a potent mark of .367 by the Kangaroos (7-4). Strong showings in the service game and at the front of the net were also employed by the home team to secure the win. SUNY Canton amassed 14 service aces and eight total blocks through the course of the bout.

Plattsburgh State kept things close in the opening frame by registering seven kills on 31 swings, but the Roos were able to pull away down the stretch and take a 1-0 edge by a set score of 25-16.

During the middle frame, the Kangaroos were seemingly able to terminate at will, as they amassed 13 kills on 26 swings for an impressive .500 attack percentage. Making matters worse for the Cardinals was their lack of punch on offense as the visitors were only able to put together 18 attack attempts in the one-sided set.

Facing a 2-0 deficit after a 25-8 loss in the second set, the Cardinals saw SUNY Canton's offense cool slightly but still couldn't generate enough of their own to keep up with the Kangaroos. SUNY Canton hit .333 in the final frame to put the match away.

Sophomore libero Jackie Mariotti finished the match with a team-best 10 digs for the Cardinals while senior Meghan Clifford passed out 13 assists. Senior Maggie Schrantz had a Plattsburgh State-best four kills to go along with seven digs.

Mackenzie Mynter had four kills, 21 assists, six service aces and a solo block to lead the way for the Kangaroos. Jessica Reynolds and Caitlin Grimshaw added eight kills each for SUNY Canton.

Plattsburgh State will return to Memorial Hall on Tuesday, Sept. 23, to take part in its only standalone home match of the season. The Cardinals will face off against Vermont foe St. Michael's at 7 p.m.
