Volleyball Blasts Paul Smith's and Johnson State to Kick Off Bluhm Coaching Era

JOHNSON, Vt. - Jake Bluhm's debut as the head volleyball coach at Plattsburgh State couldn't have gone better as the Cardinals began the 2014 campaign by pummeling Paul Smith's College and Johnson State by identical 3-0 scores.

The Cardinals move to 2-0 in the young season while Paul Smith's College remains winless at 0-2 while Johnson State sits at 1-1.

MATCH ONE: Plattsburgh State 3, Paul Smith's College 0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-15)

Each and every one of the Cardinals' 15 players saw time on the court as Plattsburgh State coasted to its first triumph of the season.

The Cardinals spread the offense around with no player amassing more than eight kills during the match. Handling the distribution of the offense was senior setter Meghan Clifford who passed out a team-high 16 assists. The Shrub Oak, N.Y., product was also a deadly force from the service line as she racked up a match-high seven service aces.

Melissa Wickers checked in during one set and took over for Clifford. By the time she exited the match, the freshman had collected eight assists of her own.

Playing in all three sets, senior Maggie Schrantz led the offensive charge by smashing down a team-high eight terminations. Schrantz, who hails from Buffalo, N.Y., also put up team-high numbers in digs (nine). Junior Emily Miller was able to swing very effectively, collecting seven kills of her own on a hitting percentage of .417.

A trio of freshmen also got some high-quality swings in, with Lauren LaDuke finishing with four kils. Both Noelle Miller and Miranda Sheffer added three kills to the Cardinals' total of 30. Sheffer also enjoyed a good performance from the service line, adding four service aces to the final tally of 13.

As a team, the Cardinals hit .241 and also totaled 28 digs through the course of the match.

MATCH TWO: Plattsburgh State 3, Johnson State (25-9, 25-16, 25-10)

The Cardinals ratcheted their offensive intensity up a couple of notches, hitting an impressive .466 as a team en route to their second straight-set triumph of the afternoon. 

Plattsburgh State boasted a pair of players who hit north of .600 including Emily Miller who posted a team-best percentage of .692 while hammering down a team-high 10 kills. Sheffer finished with eight terminations on 12 swings for a percentage of .667. LaDuke took 16 swings - the most of any Plattsburgh State player - and finished with eight kills of her own. Noelle Miller hit .500, putting down six kills. 

Once again, it was Clifford who set up her teammates by accumulating a total of 22 assists. Jackie Mariotti collected four of the Cardinals' four service aces while Sheffer added three of her own. 

On Friday, the Cardinals will play their first matches in the state of New York when they head to Canton, N.Y., to take on SUNY Potsdam in the first game of he Victory Promotions Invitational. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
