Cardinals and Cadets Battle to a 1-1 Tie

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State women's hockey team faced off with Norwich Sunday evening in a battle between #1 vs. #2 that didn't provide much insight on who is this years top team as the Cardinals and Cadets fought to a 1-1 tie in the East/West Showcase.

It was the first meeting between the two schools since the Division III National Championship game that saw the Cardinals win 9-2 just seven months ago.

However a new season brings different results. In the 2013-14 season the Cardinals out scored the Cadets 21-2 in their three meetings.

Plattsburgh (1-0-1, 0-0-0 ECAC West) looked like they were going to pick up right where they left off last season against Norwich (0-1-1, 0-0-0 ECAC East) as the Cardinals tallied a power play goal 13:56 in the first period. Jordan Lipson scored her second goal of the season in as many days. Sophomore Melissa Ames was rewarded with the assist on the Lipson goal.

The second period didn't feature any scoring as each team took three penalties within the 20 minute segment. The Cardinals did have a penalty shot opportunity when Kayla Menghin was tripped up by Desirae Kuhlmann. Menghin however was unable to convert on the penalty shot when Cadet goalie Celeste Robert successfully poke checked the puck away.

The third period was quite too throughout the first 19 minutes and change. In a penalty free period the Cadets were able to score the equalizer with just 25 seconds left with a pulled goalie. Freshman Erin Joyce scored the Norwich goal as Kaycie Anderson and Taylor Cross picked up the assists.

Neither team could regroup in overtime to score the game-winner as a total of three shots were taken in the shortened period.

The Cardinals out shot the Cadets 30-22 in the game as Ally Ross made 21 stops while Robert collected 29 saves.

Plattsburgh has enjoyed recent success against Norwich in the past couple years going 4-0-2 in the last six matchups between the two schools.

Forwards Jordan Lipson and Shannon Stewart were named to the East/West Showcase all-tournament team as each scored two goals over the weekend.

Plattsburgh will return to the ice Saturday and Sunday as they start ECAC west play on the road in Aston, Pa. to take on the Neumann Knights in a weekend doubleheader.
