Chaparro, Cabeca Help Cardinals Get Into SUNYAC Win Column in 2-0 Victory at Oswego

Freshman John Cabeca scored the first goal of his collegiate career on Saturday.
Box Score OSWEGO, N.Y. – Battling rainy conditions as well as its fair share of adversity on the pitch, the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team received goals from Fabian Chaparro and Jon Cabeca to take a 2-0 decision over SUNYAC foe and longtime rival Oswego State on Saturday afternoon.

Earning his fourth shutout victory of the season for the Cardinals (6-5-1, 1-2 SUNYAC) between the goalposts was junior Mitchell Jordon who made a pair of saves to preserve his clean sheet. Oswego State slips to 2-7-2 and 1-2-1 in league play with the loss.

With their goal-scoring drought at 242:59 coming in to Saturday's bout, the Cardinals didn't waste too much time in trying to put an end to it. Ian Spear tested Oswego State netminder Andrew Lawson for the first time in the sixth minute, launching a header on net.

The Cardinals netted their first conference goal of the season and took the lead for good early in the 27th minute. Chaparro, a junior, tracked down a ball that bounced over the head of Lawson and tapped it into the open net to put Plattsburgh State up 1-0.

After Chaparro's tally, the Lakers were the offensive instigators for the rest of the opening frame. Plattsburgh State tallied just one final shot attempt while the home squad amassed six and a pair of corner kicks through the final 12:57 of the first half.

Oswego continued to force the issue in the early stages of the final 45-minute half. Jordan made one of his two saves on the day in the 46th minute before the Lakers had another attempt which sailed high of the crossbar.

From then on, though, the Cardinals' back line made it a point to take Oswego State's offense out of the equation. Clamping down hard, the defensive players held the Lakers to just two more shots – none of which were on goal – through the final 42:31.

What the Lakers were lacking in offense the Cardinals were not, as Cabeca registered the first goal of his collegiate career in the 73rd minute to pad the Plattsburgh State advantage. Sophomore Alexis Archilla launched a perfectly placed through ball to the freshman who in turn slid it past Lawson to make things 2-0.

Although the Lakers boasted a 13-12 advantage in shots, the Cardinals made use of a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks to help them earn the road triumph.

With their three-game SUNYAC road trip in the books, Plattsburgh State will make its 2014 debut at the Field House Soccer Complex on Friday afternoon when they welcome in conference nemesis New Paltz for a 4 p.m. match.
