PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Chelsea VanGlahn netted her second career hat trick as the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team cruised to a 10-1 win over Cortland in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West contest Saturday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena.
The Cardinals (14-0-1, 7-0-0 ECAC West) struck early and often as Plattsburgh State held a 6-0 advantage at the end of the first period. Allison Era went coast-to-coast before firing a shot from the slot over the left shoulder of Cortland goaltender Deanna Meunier at the 2:59 mark to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
VanGlahn scored her first of the afternoon at 7:53 of the first, tipping in Andrea Ziesmann's shot at the back door to make it a 2-0 game.
Era picked up her second of the game at 14:03, scoring on a shot from the right circle, before Bridget Balisy notched her seventh of the season from Jordan Caldwell and Mia Favretto at 15:40.
Caldwell made it 5-0 at 18:47, tapping in a rebound for a power-play goal from Shannon Stewart and Jenny Kistner. Ten seconds later, Katelyn Turk buried a shot from in close for her first collegiate goal from Lizzie Aveson.
Cortland (2-10-2, 1-6-1 ECAC West) made a change in goal after the first period, going with Kelly Farinella the rest of the way. Meunier made 24 saves in the first period, suffering the loss, while Farinella recorded 25 stops through the final two periods.
Just 46 seconds into the second period, Giovanna Senese found the back of the net for her eighth of the year to give Plattsburgh State a seven-goal lead.
VanGlahn followed with another less than two minutes later, scoring on a short-handed breakaway, before completing the hat trick at the 9:18 mark with her fifth of the year from Senese and Ali Vakos.
With 22 seconds left in the second period, freshman defenseman Maggie Kolcon picked up her first collegiate goal to round out the scoring for the Cardinals.
The Red Dragons scored their lone goal of the afternoon when Sky Timmons punched in a rebound off a shot by Melanie Van Vliet to reach the 10-1 final. Sydney Carlucci was also credited with an assist on Timmons' third of the year.
Rookie goaltender Cami Leonard stopped 18 of the 19 shots she faced to earn her second win in as many starts for the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh State outshot Cortland, 59-19, and went 1-for-2 on the power play. The Red Dragons were unable to score on three power-play attempts.
In addition to VanGlahn's hat trick, Senese finished the day with a goal and two assists. Turk and Caldwell each tallied a goal and an assist for two points while Era added a pair of goals. Vakos and Aveson each chipped in two assists.
With the weekend sweep, Plattsburgh State gains sole possession of first place in the ECAC West standings with 14 points. Elmira sits in second with 12 points while Oswego (9) and Utica (8) come in at third and fourth, respectively.
Plattsburgh State steps away from the Stafford Ice Arena for the next two conference games as the Cardinals travel to Utica for a weekend series beginning Friday. Friday's game is set for 7 p.m. before the two teams close out the series with a 3 p.m. start on Saturday.
