PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Shannon Stewart registered a natural hat trick as the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team cruised to an 8-0 win over Cortland in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West Division game Friday night at the Stafford Ice Arena.

Chelsea VanGlahn opened the scoring at the 1:21 mark of the first, banging in a loose puck in the crease to give the Cardinals a quick 1-0 lead. Giovanna Senese and Alyssa Parke assisted on VanGlahn's second of the year.

Plattsburgh State (13-0-1, 6-0-0 ECAC West) went up by two at 14:47 of the opening period when Cortland (2-9-2, 1-5-1 ECAC West) failed to clear the puck and Caitlin Gilligan intercepted the turnover. Gilligan's shot from the left circle sailed through the five-hole of Cortland goaltender Deanna Meunier to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead after one period of play.

The Cardinals dominated the second period, outshooting the Red Dragons, 37-1. Stewart scored her first of the evening with just 2:57 gone in the period, lifting a shot from in close over the left shoulder of Meunier to make it 3-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

Stewart struck again 3:30 later by redirecting Parke's shot from the right point before she tipped in Jenny Kistner's shot on the power play at the 8:51 mark. Stewart completed the natural hat trick in a span of 5:54 to bring her season total to 13 goals.

With 2:38 left in the middle frame, Kistner netted a power-play goal with assists to Tyne Gove and Jordan Caldwell to put Plattsburgh State up by six after two periods.

Plattsburgh State added two more goals late in the third to round out the night. Senese score her seventh of the season at the 16:11 mark before rookie forward Jordan Lipson tallied her first collegiate goal off a feed from Allison Era with 2:25 left in regulation.

The Cardinals finished the night with a lopsided 68-11 advantage in shots on goal. Plattsburgh State went 2-for-4 on the power play while Cortland went 0-for-4.

Ally Ross got the nod between the pipes for the Cardinals, making 11 stops to improve to 2-0-0 and earn his second shutout of the season. Meunier recorded 60 saves in the loss for the Red Dragons.

The same two teams return to action tomorrow, wrapping up the weekend series with a 2 p.m. matchup.
