Men's Soccer Takes Down Cortland to Claim Eighth SUNYAC Crown

Matt Hamilton was named Tournament Most Valuable Player. The senior captain scored the game-winning goal in the SUNYAC Semifinal game against Oneonta earlier this week.
Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team played spoiler again Saturday afternoon as the fourth-seeded Cardinals defeated second-seeded Cortland, 2-1, to claim their eighth State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship at Jets Field on the campus of SUNY Cortland.

With the win, the Cardinals (15-5-1) earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament which will mark Plattsburgh State's first appearance in tournament since 2010.

Freshman Alexis Archilla gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at 29:03 of the first half with his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Plattsburgh State put a ball toward the top of the box after a misplay by Cortland (11-7-1). Archilla was able to get a foot on the ball and tuck a low shot inside the right post from 12 yards out.

Cortland tied the game early in the second half on an unassisted goal by Dillon Johnson. Johnson collected the ball deep in the left corner and beat a pair of Cardinal defenders before knocking a shot inside the left post at the 55:19 mark.

Just over 15 minutes later, the Cardinals regained the lead when Tom Greene scored his fifth of the year at 66:58. Joe Aratari carried the ball down the right side and fed a cross into the box where Greene one-touched a shot into net.

The Cardinals finished the afternoon with a 22-13 advantage in shots and a 10-1 edge in corner kicks.

Mitchell Jordon made four saves to improve to 11-4-0 for the Cardinals. Cortland goalkeeper Tim Beauvais stopped five shots in the loss.

Senior midfielder Matt Hamilton was honored as the Most Valuable Player of the 2013 SUNYAC Men's Soccer Tournament while Greene, Clay Sherman and Fabian Chaparro were named to the All-Tournament Team. Johnson, Ian Cusack and Joe Buffolino represented Cortland on the All-Tournament Team. Rounding out the team were Peter DiLorenzo and Kevin Nichols from The College at Brockport and Justin Rivera and Jared Van Brunt of Oneonta.

Plattsburgh State now awaits word of its next opponent in the NCAA Tournament. The 2013 bracket will be announced Monday at 1 p.m. in a selection show which can be watched exclusively at ncaa.com.
