Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2013) – Freshman Alexis Archilla provided all the offense Saturday afternoon as the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team battled through cold, rainy conditions Saturday afternoon to escape with a 2-1 win in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Quarterfinals.
A slow first half left both sides scoreless at the half as Plattsburgh State held an 8-4 advantage in shots and Buffalo State edged the Cardinals, 2-0, in corners through the first 45 minutes.
The Cardinals' (13-5-1, 6-3-0 SUNYAC) offense started to come alive in the second half, controlling the ball through much of the half to finish the day outshooting the Bengals, 23-7. Plattsburgh State also ended the afternoon with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
After a number of quality scoring opportunities that sailed high of the net, Archilla was able to get Plattsburgh State on the board at 65:24 with his eighth of the year from Nick Parrella. Parrella made a nice pass ahead to Archilla who was streaking up the right side and sent a shot into the bottom left corner past Buffalo State goalkeeper Michael Moraitis.
The lead was a short-lived one though as Buffalo State tied it up 46 seconds later on Matthew Wong's first of the season. Stephen Linderman's free kick was stopped by Plattsburgh State goalkeeper Mitchell Jordon but the ball was knocked around the box before Wong tapped it in for the equalizer.
The tension continued to build until Archilla struck again in the 83
rd minute to score his team-leading ninth of the year, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Nelson Vetter was able to direct a bouncing ball to Archilla and the Cardinal rookie took a shot from the center of the box that sailed to Moraitis' left for the eventual game winner.
The Bengals (9-9-1, 4-5-0 SUNYAC) had one last chance in the final seconds of play as the visitors were awarded a free kick with 4.8 seconds left on the clock but the shot went high over the net just before the clock ran out.
Jordon made two saves to improve to 9-4-0 in net for the Cardinals. Moraitis stopped eight shots in the loss for the Bengals.
In the other SUNYAC Quarterfinal contest, No. 3 Brockport defeated No. 6 Potsdam by a score of 4-1. The Golden Eagles will travel to No. 2 Cortland for the SUNYAC Semifinals, which is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. The fourth-seeded Cardinals will travel to top-seeded Oneonta for the other SUNYAC Semifinal matchup. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
