Men's Soccer Clinches Fourth Seed with 3-0 Victory at Geneseo

Box Score GENESEO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team locked up the No. 4 seed in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament by defeating Geneseo, 3-0, in the final conference game of the regular season Saturday afternoon.
 
The Cardinals got on the board at 23:15 when the Blue Knights were whistled for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for Plattsburgh State. Senior Matt Hamilton took the kick, firing a shot into the lower left corner of the net to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
 
Two minutes later, a defensive miscue by Geneseo resulted in an own goal, allowing the Cardinals to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
 
Plattsburgh State put the game out of reach with a goal from freshman Alexis Archilla at 50:51. Archilla took a high shot that deflected off the cross bar and into the net for his team-leading seventh goal of the year. The Cardinal rookie also leads the team with 17 points.
 
Mitchell Jordon made four saves in the Cardinals' net to improve to 8-3-0 and earn his fifth shutout of the season. Geneseo's Logan Calvey stopped two shots in the loss.
 
Each side took nine shots in Saturday's contest, while the Blue Knights held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
 
The Cardinals improve to 12-4-1 overall and 7-3-0 in conference play. Entering the tournament as the fourth seed, Plattsburgh State will be making its 23rd consecutive trip to the postseason. Plattsburgh State will host fifth-seeded Buffalo State on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. in a SUNYAC Quarterfinal matchup.
 
With the loss, Geneseo drops to 6-9-3 on the year and 3-5-1 in the SUNYAC, marking the first time in 16 seasons the Blue Knight will miss the SUNYAC Tournament.
 
Before the Cardinals can turn their attention to the postseason, Plattsburgh State faces a tough test to close out the regular season. The Cardinals travel to nationally-ranked No. 9 St. Lawrence on Wednesday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
