CORTLAND, N.Y. – Seven different players scored goals to lead the top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team to a 7-1 win versus Cortland Saturday afternoon in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena.
The Cardinals improved to 18-0-1 overall and 11-0-0 in the conference, while the Red Dragons dropped to 4-13-1 and 4-8-0.
Freshman Giovanna Senese led Plattsburgh with one goal and two assists. Junior Jenny Kistner, sophomore Alyssa Parke and freshman Andrea Ziesmann each had one goal and one assist. Senior Teal Gove, junior Ali Vakos and sophomore Shannon Stewart netted one goal apiece. Sophomore goalie Ally Ross stopped seven shots.
Senior Maggie Giamo tallied Cortland's goal with junior Gina Tomei collecting an assist. Freshman goalie Deanna Meunier made a career-high 58 saves in the loss for the Red Dragons
The Cardinals built a 3-0 lead after the first period as Kistner, Ziesmann and Stewart each scored. Plattsburgh added two goals, both on the power play from Senese and Parke, in the second period for a 5-0 advantage.
Gove opened the third with a power-play goal 30 seconds into the period before Giamo netted a short-handed goal 47 seconds later with a shot from the right side over Ross's shoulder. Vakos completed the scoring with a one-timer in front at 11:14 of the final stanza.
Plattsburgh racked up 65 shots on the afternoon, while Cortland was held to eight. The Cardinals went 4-for-5 with the extra skater while the Red Dragons were 0-for-2.
The Cardinals return home Wednesday for their final non-conference game of the regular season against the Middlebury Panthers. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Stafford Ice Arena.
