CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Shannon Stewart recorded two goals and an assist and senior Teal Gove scored twice as nationally top-ranked Plattsburgh defeated Cortland, 7-0, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West contest.
Senior Sydney Aveson made nine saves for her fourth shutout of the season as the Cardinals improved to 17-0-1 overall and 10-0 in league play. Cortland freshman goalie Deanna Meunier registered a career-best 46 saves. The Red Dragons are now 4-7 in the ECAC West and 4-12-1 overall.
Cortland trailed only 1-0 after the first period as Gove scored 5:34 into the game off an assist from Stewart. The Cardinals broke the game open with four goals in the second. Emma Rutherford scored 1:37 into the period, followed by Stewart at the 6:49 mark. Gove tallied on a power play at 13:04 and Stewart notched her team-high 17th of the season just 38 seconds later.
Plattsburgh’s final two goals came off the sticks of Bridget Balisy 11:40 into the third and Morgan MacInnis with 2:20 remaining. MacInnis finished with a goal and an assist.
Seven Cardinals registered multiple points in the victory. Breanne Bennett, Jenny Kistner, Ali Vakos and Allison Era chipped in two assists apiece.
The Cardinals held the Red Dragons to just nine shots, while Plattsburgh fired off 53 on the afternoon. Plattsburgh finished the day 1-for-4 on the power play while Cortland was 0-for-2.
The same two teams return to the ice again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. to wrap up the weekend series at Alumni Ice Arena.
