POTSDAM, N.Y – The Plattsburgh State volleyball team (5-3) opened the day winning three straight sets to defeat SUNYIT before suffering a 3-1 loss to SUNY Potsdam (5-4) on the final day of the Victory Promotions Invitational.
The Cardinals outlasted SUNYIT in the first two sets, 25-19 and 26-18, before cruising to a 25-13 win in the third set. Amanda Wickers led Plattsburgh with 16 digs. Sam Snyder finished with nine kills and 12 digs, while Theresa Lilly also picked up nine kills. Kristen Marchisatto added a team-high 18 assists in the win.
Plattsburgh got 13 assists and seven kills out of senior Kayla Nason. Rosi Cummings continues to be a force for the Cardinals, finishing with five kills, 11 digs and four service aces.
The Cardinals met conference foe Potsdam in the second match of the day, dropping the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-16. Plattsburgh held off a rally by the Bears in the third set, taking a 25-22 decisions, but failed to carry the momentum into the fourth set as Potsdam earned a 25-20 win.
Unforced errors plagued Plattsburgh, who was led by Marchisatto with 19 assists, three service aces and five digs. Wickers contributed 16 digs and Cummings finished with eight kills and 15 digs. Maggie Schrantz had a team-best nine kills.
Cummings represented Plattsburgh State on the Victory Promotions Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Plattsburgh will look to rebound next weekend at the Best Western/Ground Round Cardinal Classic. The Cardinals will host SUNY Canton, Saint Michael’s and Elms College in the annual tournament, marking the only home matches of the 2012 season. Tournament play begins Friday at 6 p.m.
