Volleyball Defeats St. Lawrence, Falls to Southern Vermont to Open Victory Promotions Invitational

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State volleyball team (4-2) went 1-1 in the first day of action at the Victory Promotions Invitational, hosted by SUNY Potsdam Friday. The Cardinals defeated St. Lawrence University in their first match, 3-1 (25-19, 25-12, 18-25, 25-23), before closing out the day with a 3-0 (19-25, 25-27, 19-25) loss to Southern Vermont.
 
Plattsburgh took the first two set against the Saints as Rosi Cummings continued her strong start to the 2012 season with 11 kills and 21 digs. St. Lawrence rallied to take the third set by seven points, before the Cardinals came out on top, 25-23, in a close fourth set.
 
Kaitlyn Norton and Amanda Wickers added 13 digs apiece, while newcomer Kristen Marchisatto led Plattsburgh with 19 assists. Abby Mell finished the match with three solo blocks and Laura Diehl assisted on four blocks to help the Cardinals earn their fourth win.
 
Southern Vermont proved to be a tougher matchup for the Cardinals Friday night as Plattsburgh dropped three straight sets. Theresa Lilly contributed seven kills and three digs in the loss, while Kayla Nason finished with 13 assists.
 
Wickers led the Cardinals in game two with eight digs. Jeanette Braun helped the Plattsburgh defense with a pair of solo blocks. Diehl added three block assists while Mell and Cummings added two each.
 
The Cardinals face a quick turnaround as they prepare to take on SUNYIT at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Plattsburgh wraps up the tournament against conference foe, SUNY Potsdam, at 1:30 p.m.
