CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team staged a rally late in the second half to force overtime, but Cortland scored on a penalty kick at 91:10 to hand the Cardinals a 4-3 loss in Friday’s dramatic State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup.
The loss marks the first of the season for the Cardinals, who entered Friday’s game with a 10-game unbeaten streak.
Plattsburgh State (10-1-0, 1-1-0 SUNYAC) took the lead in the 22
nd minute on Mike Payne’s fourth of the year. Joe Aratari carried the ball wide on the right toward the end line and sent a low cross into the box. Payne controlled the pass and blasted a 10-yard left-footed shot past Cortland goalkeeper Tim Beauvais.
The momentum of the game changed early in the second half after Plattsburgh earned a penalty kick in the 50
th minute on a hand ball in the box, but Beauvais denied Payne’s shot to keep it a 1-0 game. Just over a minute later Cortland’s Gabriel Morales fed a pass to Reiser on the left side. Reiser carried the ball through two Plattsburgh defenders deep into the left side of the box and sent a low shot inside the right post to tie the game at 1-1.
Four minutes later, the Red Dragons (5-4, 3-4 SUNYAC) struck again when Jordan Buffolino launched a 35-yard shot over Plattsburgh goalkeeper Andy Heighington and into the top left corner of the net. Cortland’s Jordan Mastronardi scored what appeared to be an insurance goal at 80:13 when he picked up a loose ball and knocked a shot to the right of Heighington.
Things got dramatic in the last six and a half minutes of regulation as the Cardinals rallied to tie the game. After a Cortland foul on a hand ball, Matt Hamilton buried a 30-yard direct kick into the upper right corner in the 84 minute. With Plattsburgh pressing in the final minutes, Hamilton then delivered a cross from the left side to the far post where Cardinal rookie Ethan Votraw sent a clean header inside the post to even the score at 3-3 with 29 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Beauvais made an early save off a shot by Votraw and as Cortland countered, a Red Dragon player was brought down inside the box resulting in a penalty kick. Chris McBride converted the kick with a shot inside the right post at 91:10 to give the Red Dragons the victory.
Plattsburgh held a 26-18 advantage in shots, including a 13-4 edge in the first half. The Cardinals drew nine corner kicks, while the Red Dragons took two. Chippy play on both sides led to four yellow cards as the Cardinals received three yellow cards and the Red Dragons one.
Heighington, who had not allowed a goal in 281 minutes, gave up four goals and recorded four saves in his first loss of the year. Beauvais finished with five saves for Cortland.
The Cardinals will look to get back on track tomorrow as Plattsburgh travels to Oswego to wrap up the weekend. The conference matchup is set for 1 p.m.
