Cardinals Drop Another Pair of Matches in First Weekend of SUNYAC Play

CORTLAND, N.Y. – A new day and a fresh start didn’t yield any SUNYAC victories for the Plattsburgh State volleyball team (7-8, 0-4 SUNYAC), as it dropped two more matches against conference adversaries on Saturday (Sep. 22) at SUNY Cortland.

MATCH ONE: Oneonta State 3, Plattsburgh State 1 (25-22, 12-25, 25-21, 25-20)
For the second time in as many matches, the Cardinals were forced to try and dig themselves out of a 1-0 hole after dropping the first set to Red Dragons.

Coming out firing on all cylinders, the Cardinals knotted matters at one set each in decisive fashion with a 25-12 victory in the second set. Plattsburgh State smashed home nine kills on 38 swings in the frame.

The Cardinals were able to keep things close through the final two sets of the match, but couldn’t catch up to the Red Dragons.

Despite the setback, Plattsburgh State put on a display of balanced attacking. Theresa Lilly finished with a team-high 12 terminations and completed her double-double with 10 digs. The senior also posted a solo block as well as a block assist.

Freshman Laura Diehl enjoyed an efficient match, accumulated 11 kills on 21 attacks. The imposing middle hitter also picked up a pair of solo blocks and two block assists.

Rosi Cummings rounded out the three-pronged Plattsburgh State attack plan, finishing with 10 kills and a match-high 13 digs for her third consecutive double-double. Jeanette Braun added five kills and a trio of digs to the cause.

Kristen Marchisetto and Kayla Nason finished with 18 and 19 assists respectively. Marchisetto also picked up two of the four Plattsburgh State service aces in the match while Nason chipped in one of her own.

MATCH TWO: No. 9 SUNY Cortland 3, Plattsburgh State 0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-23)
Try as they might, the Cardinals had a difficult time trying to hit through, around or over the stout defense of the No. 9-ranked Red Dragons. Plattsburgh State finished with 23 kills and 17 attack errors on 98 swings – good only for a hitting percentage of .061.

Cummings saw her streak of double-doubles come to an end, as the Plattsburgh, N.Y., product finished the match with team-highs in kills (seven) and digs (12). The senior also put her volleyball prowess on display from the service line, scoring a trio of service aces in the match.

Amanda Wickers notched a pair of terminations as well as 10 digs and an assist. Lilly added five kills and a pair of digs while Marchisetto and Nason finished with 10 assists each.

The Cardinals will aim to put an end to their losing skid on Tuesday (Sep. 25) as they make the drive to Canton, N.Y., to take on St. Lawrence. Plattsburgh State bested the Saints 3-1 earlier in the season, and will look to make it 2-0 against their non-conference foe when the match commences at 6 p.m.
