PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to nine games, escaping SUNY Potsdam with a 1-0 win Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Turf Field.
The Cardinals’ offense was silenced in the first half as the two teams played a scoreless first half. Despite a 10-7 Plattsburgh advantage through the first 45 minutes, Potsdam held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
Jason Baker gave the Cardinals the only goal they would need at 50:53, picking up a loose ball in front of the net and knocking it by Potsdam goalkeeper Jake Gyder. The unassisted goal was Baker’s first of the year.
Seven minutes later, the Bears threatened with a header shot by Mike Jackson, but Andy Heighington was there to make the save and preserve the lead. Heighington had four saves for Plattsburgh.
Gyder made four stops for the Bears in the loss.
Plattsburgh finished the day with 19 shots and took nine corner kicks. Potsdam took 11 shots and drew three corner kicks.
With the win, Plattsburgh improves to 9-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the SUNYAC. Potsdam drops to 0-1-0 in the conference and 2-6-0 on the year. The Cardinals have five shutouts in their first nine contests.
Plattsburgh returns home Tuesday for a non-conference game against Utica College. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Field House Soccer Complex.
