PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State volleyball team (7-4) was able to hold off the SUNY Canton Kangaroos in three straight sets to wrap up a 2-1 weekend at the 2012 Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic.
In Saturday’s early match, Saint Michael’s took three straight sets in dominating fashion to pick up the sweep against Elms College (25-9, 25-9, 25-13). With the win, the Purple Knights finished a perfect weekend at the tournament and improve to 6-12 on the year.
Rosi Cummings gave the Kangaroos trouble, finishing the day with 12 kills and 14 digs for the double-double. She also added three service aces. Freshman Kristen Marchisatto led the Cardinals with four services aces and added eight digs. Theresa Lilly contributed six kills and hit double-digits in digs with 12. Laura Diehl also helped the Cardinals keep Canton at bay with eight kills.
Marchisatto and senior Kayla Nason had 14 set assists each.
With Saturday marking the final regular season home match for the Cardinals, the squad honored the senior class of Kayla Nason, Abby Mell, Theresa Lilly and Rosi Cummings prior to the start of the match.
The Cardinals hit the road next weekend for their first round of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play, which will be hosted Friday and Saturday by SUNY Cortland. Plattsburgh will be looking to avenge an early season loss to SUNY Potsdam in the first match Friday at 5 p.m. before wrapping up the day one against New Paltz at 7 p.m.
