SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – In a battle of two unbeaten teams, the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team (7-0-0) broke a 1-1 tie with 6:15 to play for a 2-1 non-conference win over Skidmore College at Wachenheim Field Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, Plattsburgh got on the board first at 55:43 when Matt Hamilton drilled a rebound off a blocked restart to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first this season against the Skidmore (4-1-1) defense.
The Thoroughbreds got the equalizer at 64:24 when Adam Beek placed a perfect cross to Aldin Medunjanin who quickly fired one past Plattsburgh keeper Zack Kruizenga from the top of the box for the 1-1 score.
Both teams threatened late, but Joe Aratari got the game-winner when he fired a shot from 30 yards out that just caught the left side of the net for the 2-1 final.
Plattsburgh held a slight 17-14 edge in shots, while Skidmore had an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. The teams combined for 39 fouls.
Kruizenga earned the first win of his Cardinal career, stopping six shots in the win. Skidmore goalkeeper Eli Kisselbach had seven saves for the Thoroughbreds, including six in the first half.
The Cardinals return home Wednesday to host the Clarkson Golden Knights. The non-conference game is set for 7 p.m. at the Field House Soccer Complex.
