Cardinals Sweep Elms, Fall to Saint Michael's in Day One of Cardinal Classic

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.  – The Plattsburgh State women’s volleyball team (6-4) cruised to a 3-0 victory against Elms College in the opening match of the 2012 Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic. Game two proved to be a tougher matchup for the Cardinals, who dropped three straight sets to Saint Michael’s College.
 
Plattsburgh commanded all three sets against the Elms College Blazers (25-10, 25-12, 25-11). Maggie Schrantz led the Cardinals with six kills. Rosi Cummings picked up four kills while adding a team-high five service aces and eight digs. Kayla Nason contributed 21 assists in the win.
 
Despite a few nice runs by the Cardinals, Saint Michael’s topped Plattsburgh in the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-16, respectively. The Cardinals would not go down without a fight in the third set, rallying to tie it 24-24. The two teams exchanged points before the Purple Knights were able to get the 28-26 win and take the match, 3-0.
 
Cummings finished with seven kills and five digs in the second match. Kristen Marchisatto led Plattsburgh with 16 set assists while Amanda Wickers added six digs. Abby Mell had three block assists, while Laura Diehl and Theresa Lilly each had a pair of block assists.
 
Court two also featured two matches in the first day of the Cardinal Classic. Saint Michael’s defeated SUNY Canton in the early match, 3-1. The Kangaroos were able to rebound in their second match of the evening, defeating Elms College 3-0.
 
Elms and Saint Michael’s will kickoff the second day of action with a match tomorrow at 10 a.m. The Cardinals will close out the tournament against SUNY Canton at noon. Plattsburgh will honor its senior class prior to the match against SUNY Canton as Saturday will mark the final regular season home game of the 2012 season.
