PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State volleyball team opened the 2012 season with two strong performances Friday but settled for a split in the first day of action at the Oneonta State Invitational.
The Cardinals defeated Hartwick by taking three straight sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-23) to begin the day. Rosi Cummings had 10 kills and five digs while Amanda Wickers also adding five digs. Freshman Kristen Marchisatto had a nice debut, picking up 11 assists, five digs and two service aces in her first collegiate match.
Plattsburgh (1-1) took Lewis & Clark to five sets before falling, 3-2 (17-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-23, 14-16). The Cardinals dropped the first two sets before rallying to take the next two, but Lewis & Clark took the final set to hand Plattsburgh its first loss of the year.
Cummings had another solid game, finishing with 13 kills, 18 digs and two block assists. Kayla Nason and Marchisatto added 20 assists apiece and newcomer Laura Diehl had two solo blocks, three block assists and nine kills.
The Cardinals will face Emmanuel Saturday at 11:30 a.m. The winner of that match will play again at 3:30 p.m. while the loser returns to the court at 1:30 p.m.
